Section § 28100

Explanation

This law requires that a pilot car must have at least one red warning flag on each side. These flags need to be at least 16 inches square and should be visible from both the front and back of the car. When the car is not being used for piloting, the flags should be removed or covered.

A pilot car shall display at least one red warning flag on each side of the vehicle. The flags shall be a minimum of 16 inches square, and shall be mounted so as to be visible from both the front and rear of the vehicle. The flags shall be removed or covered when the vehicle is not operating as a pilot car.

Section § 28101

Explanation

This law outlines the specific requirements for a 'pilot car' used in transport operations. A pilot car must be at least 60 inches wide and equipped with several items for safety and communication. These include a STOP/SLOW paddle, an orange safety vest, shirt, or jacket, a red hand flag that is 24 inches square, and a two-way radio for communication.

In addition to the lighting, sign, and flag requirements in Sections 25270, 27904, 27904.5, and 28100, a pilot car shall meet all of the following requirements:
(a)CA Vehicle Code § 28101(a) Be a vehicle not less than 60 inches in width.
(b)CA Vehicle Code § 28101(b) Be equipped with all of the following:
(1)CA Vehicle Code § 28101(b)(1) One STOP/SLOW paddle.
(2)CA Vehicle Code § 28101(b)(2) One orange vest, shirt, or jacket.
(3)CA Vehicle Code § 28101(b)(3) One red hand flag (24 inches square).
(4)CA Vehicle Code § 28101(b)(4) One two-way radio communication device.

Section § 28102

Explanation

If you use pilot cars with devices to measure vertical clearance, those devices must follow the rules laid out in Section 35252.

Pilot cars equipped with vertical clearance measuring devices shall comply with Section 35252.

Section § 28103

Explanation

This law states that it's illegal for anyone to break any rule in this article, or not have the necessary equipment working properly on their vehicle.

It is unlawful and an infraction for any person to violate any provision of this article or to fail to have any required equipment in good working order.
