Section § 38335

Explanation

This law requires that when driving a motor vehicle from half an hour after sunset to half an hour before sunrise, the vehicle must have at least one white headlight facing forward. The headlight must be bright enough to illuminate people and vehicles up to 200 feet ahead.

When operated from one-half hour after sunset to one-half hour before sunrise, each motor vehicle shall be equipped with at least one lighted white headlamp directed toward the front of the vehicle. Such lamp shall be of an intensity sufficient to reveal persons and vehicles at a distance of at least 200 feet.

Section § 38345

Explanation

This law mandates that each motor vehicle must have at least one red taillight that is clearly visible from the rear when driving between half an hour after sunset and half an hour before sunrise. This also applies to the last vehicle in a series of connected vehicles, such as trailers or caravans.

When operated from one-half hour after sunset to one-half hour before sunrise, each motor vehicle which is not in combination with any other vehicle shall be equipped with at least one lighted red taillamp which shall be clearly visible from the rear.

Section § 38346

Explanation

In California, you're not allowed to have a flashing or steady red or blue warning light on an off-highway vehicle, like an ATV, unless it's allowed by another law or there's a serious danger.

A person shall not display a flashing or steady burning red or blue warning light on an off-highway motor vehicle except as permitted by Section 21055 or when an extreme hazard exists.
