Section § 1970

Explanation

This law allows local authorities to put up signs recognizing the sponsors of the Adopt-A-Riverway Program on highways in their area. These signs have to follow existing rules about signs.

Before placing these courtesy signs, the local authority must approve the plan by a majority vote. The plan should detail where the signs will be placed and confirm that they won’t harm the area’s environment.

The signs must say 'Adopt-A-Riverway' at the top and include the sponsor's name or logo, which the sponsor has to pay for. The text and logos on these signs have to be large and readable.

(a)CA Streets And Highways Code § 1970(a) Local authorities, with respect to highways under their respective jurisdictions, may place and maintain, or cause to be placed and maintained, courtesy signs to recognize the sponsors of the Adopt-A-Riverway Program.
(b)CA Streets And Highways Code § 1970(b) Courtesy signs shall be consistent with existing code provisions and department rules and regulations concerning signs.
(c)CA Streets And Highways Code § 1970(c) Courtesy signs shall only be placed upon the highways of a local authority, upon the approval of an authorizing resolution by a majority of the members of the governing body of that local authority. The resolution authorizing the placement of courtesy signs shall include all of the following:
(1)CA Streets And Highways Code § 1970(c)(1) A general plan of where the courtesy signs will be placed within the geographical borders of the local authority, including any street, bike trail, or pedestrian path.
(2)CA Streets And Highways Code § 1970(c)(2) A finding that the planned placement of the courtesy signs would not degrade the natural environment of the area.
(d)CA Streets And Highways Code § 1970(d) Courtesy signs shall contain the title “Adopt-A-Riverway” at the top of the sign and the name or logo of the sponsoring person or entity below the “Adopt-A-Riverway” title. Logos shall be provided at the sponsors’ own cost. Both the title and the logo shall be in large enough fonts that are easily read.

Section § 1975

Explanation

If you donate at least $5,000 each year to the Adopt-A-Riverway Fund, the Department of Food and Agriculture may give you a courtesy sign. You can choose the county and even specify the location for the sign.

They can work with local authorities to manage the sign's production, placement, and upkeep. Expenses for these signs are covered by the fund.

(a)CA Streets And Highways Code § 1975(a) Courtesy signs may be awarded by the Department of Food and Agriculture, to persons that donate a minimum of five thousand dollars ($5,000) annually to the Adopt-A-Riverway Fund. Donors may stipulate in which county they desire the courtesy signs be placed and may request specific sign placement within the county.
(b)CA Streets And Highways Code § 1975(b) The Department of Food and Agriculture may enter into an agreement with a local authority for production, placement, and maintenance of courtesy signs to be awarded pursuant to this section.
(c)CA Streets And Highways Code § 1975(c) The costs incurred by the local authorities associated with placing and maintaining courtesy signs shall be paid for out of the Adopt-A-Riverway Fund.

(b)CA Streets And Highways Code § 1978(b) Signs or additions to signs described in subdivision (a) that are on a state highway shall only be placed or added to upon the approval of the Department of Transportation.
