Chapter 3Cullet Specifications for Fiberglass Manufacturing
Section § 19515
This law section states that the quality standards listed in this chapter are the lowest standards that cullet (recycled glass) must meet to qualify for an exemption referenced in another section, Section 19522.
Section § 19515.5
This section outlines the chemical composition requirements for certain materials, likely involving fiberglass products. For each oxide and compound listed, such as Silicon Dioxide and Calcium Oxide, there are specified percentage weight ranges allowed. These components must adhere to certain tolerances, ensuring they stay within a given percentage range of the target values.
Additional specifics include moisture content, which must be below 0.5%, and that the material should not cake, maintaining a free-flowing property. This implies stringent quality control measures in manufacturing these materials.
Section § 19516
This section sets limits on the amount of certain inorganic materials that can be present in a sample based on their mesh size. It specifies that materials larger than a 12 mesh sieve should not be present at all. Materials larger than a 20 mesh should comprise less than 0.1% by weight, while materials smaller than a 20 mesh should be under 0.2%. Magnetic materials should also be less than 0.1% and nonmagnetic metals are not permitted.
Section § 19517
This section covers the requirements for the physical makeup of cullet, which is crushed glass used in fiberglass production. It specifies two types based on the needs of the manufacturer: coarse and fine cullet. Coarse cullet must have at least 25% of material passing through a 12-mesh screen, with no particles larger than 1/4 inch and a maximum of 15% that is very fine. Fine cullet should have 0.5% or less passing through a 12-mesh screen with similar fine particle limits.
The section also outlines acceptable color distributions for flint, green, and amber cullet. Each color type has a nominal percentage weight with a tolerance of +/- 3.0%.
Section § 19518
This section states that the department has the authority to modify minimum quality requirements for cullet, which is recycled glass, depending on how well the fiberglass industry can handle increased contamination in the cullet.
Section § 19519
This law requires fiberglass manufacturers to follow all relevant state and federal environmental, health, and safety laws when they use recycled glass pieces, known as cullet, in making fiberglass.
