Explanation

This section simply names the law as the California Golden Shield Act and states it can be referred to by this title.

This chapter shall be known and may be cited as the California Golden Shield Act.

Section § 3411

Explanation

Each year, the Governor of California will give a special award called the Golden Shield Award to the close family members of public safety officers who died while performing their duties during that year.

The Governor annually shall award, and present in the name of the State of California, a Golden Shield Award of appropriate design, with ribbons and appurtenances, to the next of kin of, or immediate family members of, every public safety officer who, while serving in any capacity under competent authority, has been killed in the line of duty in that year.

Explanation

This law defines who qualifies as a 'public safety officer.' It includes firefighters, law enforcement officers, and emergency services officers who work for public agencies, regardless of whether they are paid or volunteer. Law enforcement officers cover roles like corrections officers, court officers, and civil defense officers.

For the purposes of this chapter, “public safety officer” means a person serving a public agency, with or without compensation, as a firefighter, law enforcement officer, or emergency services officer. “Law enforcement officer” includes a person who is a corrections or court officer or a civil defense officer.
