Market Milk and CreamGrade a Market Milk
Section § 35891
This law sets the standards for Grade A raw milk in California. The health of the cows and goats must be checked by an official every two months. The milk must come from farms that score at least 90% on a specific farm evaluation. Additionally, it must be properly cooled and upon delivery to the consumer, it should contain no more than 15,000 bacteria or 10 coliform bacteria per milliliter.
Section § 35892
Anyone who handles grade A raw milk must maintain high levels of cleanliness and cannot have a contagious disease that milk can transmit.
To ensure this, milk handlers may have to undergo health checks, including physical and bacteriological exams, conducted by an approved lab or person. These exams must take place when they're hired and every six months afterward.
Section § 35893
This law sets the standards for grade A pasteurized milk. It requires that cows or goats used for this milk are checked by an official representative at least every six months. The milk must be cooled according to specific guidelines and come from farms that score 90% or higher on an official scorecard. Additionally, the milk must meet certain established standards.
