Section § 21451

Explanation

This law states that unless specified otherwise, inspecting carcasses with hides and the hides themselves should be done just like the rules used for inspecting cattle as described in another section of the law.

Except as otherwise provided in this chapter, inspection of carcasses with the hide on and of hides shall be made in the same manner as inspection of cattle pursuant to Chapter 6 (commencing with Section 21051) of this division.

Section § 21452

Explanation

This law allows the chief to decide if hides or carcasses can skip inspection when it's deemed unnecessary. In other words, if inspecting them won't make any difference, they don’t have to be inspected.

The chief may provide for the release of hides or carcasses from inspection in cases in which inspection would serve no useful purpose.

Section § 21453

Explanation

This section explains that if an animal's hide or carcass has already been inspected under certain specified conditions, it does not need to be inspected again. Specifically, it applies to animals inspected under certain parts of Sections 21051 and 22004, among others.

A new inspection need not be made of the hide or carcass of an animal which was previously inspected as follows:
(a)CA Food And Agriculture Code § 21453(a) Inspected pursuant to subdivision (e) of Section 21051.
(b)CA Food And Agriculture Code § 21453(b) Inspected pursuant to subdivisions (d), (f) and (g) of Section 21051 and slaughtered in accordance with Section 21057.
(c)CA Food And Agriculture Code § 21453(c) Inspected pursuant to Section 22004 and subdivision (c) of Section 22008.

Section § 21455

Explanation

If you're not a licensed slaughterer and you slaughter cattle or calves, you must keep the hide, including any brands, intact until it's checked or approved. Also, you have to show the hide to inspectors or peace officers if they ask.

Every person not a licensed slaughterer that slaughters any cattle or calves and does not send the carcass and hide to a licensed frozen food locker plant pursuant to Section 22003 shall do all of the following:
(a)CA Food And Agriculture Code § 21455(a) Keep in his possession the hide, with the brands attached to it, without any alteration or disfiguration, until the hide is inspected or released.
(b)CA Food And Agriculture Code § 21455(b) Exhibit the hide to any inspector or peace officer on demand.

Section § 21456

Explanation

This law states that you can't have meat from an animal that wasn't killed by a licensed slaughterer unless you have proof. That proof can either be the animal's hide with ears and brands still on it or an official certificate showing the hide or carcass was inspected or released according to the rules.

A person shall not have in his possession a carcass or any meat from a carcass which was not slaughtered by a licensed slaughterer, unless he has in his possession and exhibits to any inspector or peace officer on demand one of the following:
(a)CA Food And Agriculture Code § 21456(a) The hide of the animal from which the meat was obtained, with the ears and the brands attached to it, without alteration or disfiguration.
(b)CA Food And Agriculture Code § 21456(b) A certificate of inspection or release of the hide or of the carcass with the hide on it, which was issued pursuant to this article.

Section § 21457

Explanation

This law states that you can't take off any inspection marks from an animal hide until after you've started the tanning process.

A person shall not remove any evidence of inspection from a hide until after it has been partially tanned.

Section § 21458

Explanation

This law prohibits anyone from selling, giving away, delivering, transporting, buying, accepting, or receiving an animal hide unless that hide has been checked or approved through inspection.

A person shall not sell, give away, deliver, transport, buy, accept, or receive the hide of any animal unless the hide has been inspected or released.

Section § 21459

Explanation

You cannot change or remove a brand from an animal hide, or destroy the hide in any way, until it has been checked or cleared by an inspector.

A person shall not obliterate, alter, or remove a brand which is on a hide, or burn or in any manner destroy the hide until it has been inspected or released.
