Section § 2240

Explanation

This law states that when counties in California spend extra money to update and clean up their voter registration records, the state will pay them back using funds allocated by the Legislature. This process is known as 'purging' the voter registration files.

From moneys appropriated by the Legislature, the Controller shall reimburse counties for additional costs incurred by counties for purging voter registration files pursuant to Article 2 (commencing with Section 2220).

Section § 2241

Explanation

If a county wants to request reimbursement for election costs, it needs to report the number of registered voters to the Controller as decided by the Secretary of State, according to specific guidelines. The county must file these claims by October 31 of election years that include a direct primary and general election.

Any claim submitted to the Controller pursuant to this article shall state that the county had reimbursable costs and the number of registered voters in the county as determined by the Secretary of State under subdivisions (c) and (d) of Section 2187. The claims shall be made to the Controller by October 31 of the even-numbered year in which a direct primary and general election are held.
