Section § 1200

Explanation

This law states that California's statewide general elections are held on the first Tuesday following the first Monday in November every even-numbered year.

The statewide general election shall be held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November of each even-numbered year.

Section § 1201

Explanation

In California, there are two different schedules for statewide direct primary elections. For years that aren’t divisible by four, the primary is held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in June. In years divisible by four, the primary happens on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in March.

The statewide direct primary shall be held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in June of each even-numbered year that is not evenly divisible by four and on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in March in each even-numbered year that is evenly divisible by four.

Section § 1202

Explanation

In years divisible evenly by four, California combines its presidential primary election with its statewide direct primary election. These combined elections take place on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in March.

The presidential primary shall be consolidated with the statewide direct primary in any year that is evenly divisible by four, and the consolidated primary shall be held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in March.
