Section § 4510

Explanation

Section § 4510.1

Explanation

If you're seeking to become a licensed psychiatric technician in California and have finished an approved training program, you can apply for a temporary permit. This permit allows you to work under supervision, performing tasks you learned in your program, while you await your official licensing exam results. It remains valid until you pass the exam or for up to nine months, whichever happens first. If you successfully pass the exam, the permit continues until your full license is issued or for an additional six months, again, whichever comes first. However, if you fail the exam, your temporary permit ends either when you receive official notification by mail or on the date specified on the permit itself, whichever is sooner. While holding this temporary permit, you must only refer to yourself as a 'psychiatric technician interim permittee' or 'P.T.I.P.'

An applicant seeking licensure through examination must submit a written application using the form prescribed by the board. Provided that the application for licensure is received by the board no later than four months after the completion of a board-approved psychiatric technician program and the application's approval, the board may issue an interim permit. This permit authorizes the applicant to practice all skills included in the permittee’s foundational course of study, either until the results of the first licensing examination are known, or for a period of nine months, whichever event occurs first.
A permittee is required to operate under the direct supervision of a licensed psychiatric technician or a registered nurse. The supervising professional must be physically present and available on the premises while the permittee is providing professional services. The permittee is authorized to perform any function that was taught within their basic psychiatric technician program.
Should the applicant pass the examination, the interim permit will remain valid until an initial license is issued by the board, or for a maximum duration of six months following the examination's successful completion, whichever comes first. If the applicant fails the examination, the interim permit will be terminated upon receipt of notice sent via certified mail with return receipt requested, or if the applicant does not receive such notice, on the date specified within the interim permit, whichever occurs first. An interim permittee is prohibited from using any title or designation other than 'psychiatric technician interim permittee' or 'P.T.I.P.'

Section § 4510.2

Explanation

Section § 4511

Explanation

To seek a psychiatric technician's license within California, an individual must be a minimum of 18 years of age and have completed secondary education or an equivalent academic program. Furthermore, completion of a specialized curriculum encompassing nursing competencies and focused training for the care of individuals with mental or developmental disabilities is mandatory. This training may be undertaken at an authorized educational institution or be recognized as equivalent by either the institution or the board, and must incorporate practical clinical experience. Lastly, the applicant must not have engaged in any conduct that would warrant disciplinary proceedings if performed by an already licensed psychiatric technician.

A candidate seeking a psychiatric technician's license must possess the subsequent qualifications:
(a)CA Negosyo At Propesyon Code § 4511(a) Attain a minimum age of 18 years.
(b)CA Negosyo At Propesyon Code § 4511(b) Have successfully concluded an approved general education curriculum up to the 12th grade level, or an equivalent thereof as established by the board.
(c)CA Negosyo At Propesyon Code § 4511(c) Have successfully completed (1) a designated curriculum and practical instruction within an institution sanctioned by the board, said curriculum and instruction to encompass the nursing knowledge and proficiencies requisite for the care of any ailing individual, and furthermore, those specialized proficiencies essential for the care of individuals with mental disabilities and developmental disabilities, or (2) a curriculum and practical instruction which, when combined with prior training or experience, is deemed by an institution sanctioned by the board to possess equivalent academic credits to its standard program for psychiatric technician preparation, or (3) have concluded a curriculum and practical instruction which, in the board's judgment, is commensurate with the foundational requirements of an authorized program for psychiatric technicians within the state. Direct clinical inpatient experience shall constitute an indispensable component of any such designated or equivalent curriculum and practical instruction.
(d)CA Negosyo At Propesyon Code § 4511(d) Have refrained from committing any action which, if perpetrated by a licensed psychiatric technician, would serve as justification for disciplinary measures.

Section § 4515

Explanation

If you have a valid psychiatric technician license from another state or country, you can apply for a California license. You'll need to pay an application fee and meet certain qualifications as decided by the board.

Upon written application and receipt of the required application fee the board may issue a license to any applicant who possesses a valid unrevoked license or certificate as a psychiatric technician issued by any other state or a foreign country, and who in the opinion of the board has the qualifications set forth in Section 4511.

Section § 4519

Explanation
