Section § 7558

Explanation

If you have a private investigator license, branch office certificate, or qualified manager license in California, it will expire after two years on the last day of the month it was issued, unless you renew it. This rule will start being enforced on January 1, 2025.

(a)CA Business & Professions Code § 7558(a) A private investigator license, branch office certificate, qualified manager license, and pocket card issued under this chapter expires at midnight on the last day of the month two years following the date of issuance unless renewed.
(b)CA Business & Professions Code § 7558(b) This section shall become operative on January 1, 2025.

Section § 7558.1

Explanation

If you want to renew your unexpired license or certificate, you need to apply before it expires, use the designated form, and pay a renewal fee. When you renew, you'll get proof of renewal and updated photo ID cards. However, your license or certificate won't be renewed if you haven't paid any fines that were assigned to you and not settled. This rule has been in effect since January 1, 2021.

(a)CA Business & Professions Code § 7558.1(a) To renew an unexpired license or certificate, the licensee shall, on or before the date on which it would otherwise expire, apply for renewal on a form prescribed by the director or the director’s designee and pay the renewal fee prescribed by this chapter. On renewal, such evidence of renewal of the license or certificate as the director or the director’s designee may prescribe, and enhanced photo identification cards for the persons mentioned in Section 7529, shall be issued to the licensee.
(b)CA Business & Professions Code § 7558.1(b) A license or certificate shall not be renewed until any and all fines assessed pursuant to Section 7564 and not resolved in accordance with the provisions of that section have been paid.
(c)CA Business & Professions Code § 7558.1(c) This section shall become operative on January 1, 2021.

Section § 7558.5

Explanation

This law allows for the renewal of an expired license or branch office certificate within three years of its expiration. To renew, one must submit an application using the correct form and pay the current renewal fee. If the renewal is sought more than 30 days after the license expired, an additional late fee must be paid. The renewal becomes effective as soon as the application, renewal fee, and any late fee have been completed, and it will last until the next expiration date unless it is renewed again. Additionally, renewing a license does not prevent disciplinary actions for any violations that occurred before the renewal date.

Except as otherwise provided in this article, an expired license or branch office certificate may be renewed at any time within three years after its expiration on filing of application for renewal on a form prescribed by the director, and payment of the renewal fee in effect on the last preceding regular renewal date. If the license or certificate is renewed more than 30 days after its expiration, the licensee, as a condition precedent to renewal, shall also pay the delinquency fee prescribed in this chapter. Renewal under this section shall be effective on the date on which the application is filed, on the date on which the renewal fee is paid, or on the date on which the delinquency fee, if any, is paid, whichever last occurs. If so renewed, the license or certificate shall continue in effect through the date provided in Section 7558 which next occurs after the effective date of the renewal, when it shall expire if it is not again renewed.
Renewal of a license or certificate shall not prohibit the bringing of disciplinary proceedings for an act committed before the effective date of the renewal.

Section § 7559

Explanation

This law says that if your license, branch office certificate, or qualified manager certificate is suspended, you can still renew it as usual. However, even if renewed, you cannot perform any activities related to that license or certificate while it remains suspended until it is officially reinstated. Additionally, you cannot do anything that goes against the order or judgment that suspended it. This rule will start being enforced on January 1, 2025.

(a)CA Business & Professions Code § 7559(a) A suspended license, branch office certificate, or qualified manager certificate is subject to expiration and shall be renewed as provided in this article, but renewal of the license does not entitle the licensee, while the license remains suspended and until it is reinstated, to engage in the licensed activity, or in any other activity, or in any other activity or conduct in violation of the order or judgment by which the license was suspended, and renewal of the branch office certificate or qualified manager certificate does not entitle the licensee, while the certificate remains suspended, and until it is reinstated, to engage in the licensed activity at the location for which the certificate was issued, or to engage in any other activity or conduct in violation of the order or judgment by which the certificate was suspended.
(b)CA Business & Professions Code § 7559(b) This section shall become operative on January 1, 2025.

Section § 7559.5

Explanation

If a person’s professional license or certificate is revoked, it will still expire like normal, but it can’t be renewed. If they want to get it back after it’s expired, they must pay a fee equal to the renewal fee at the time it was revoked, plus any late fees. This rule starts being in effect on January 1, 2025.

(a)CA Business & Professions Code § 7559.5(a) A revoked license, branch office certificate, or qualified manager certificate is subject to expiration as provided in this article, but it may not be renewed. If it is reinstated after its expiration, the licensee, as a condition precedent to its reinstatement, shall pay a reinstatement fee in an amount equal to the renewal fee in effect on the last regular renewal date before the date on which it is reinstated, plus the delinquency fee, if any, accrued at the time of its revocation.
(b)CA Business & Professions Code § 7559.5(b) This section shall become operative on January 1, 2025.

Section § 7560

Explanation

If a license or branch office certificate isn't renewed within three years after it expires, you can't renew or reinstate it. Instead, you have to start over and meet all the original requirements to get a new one.

A license or branch office certificate which is not renewed within three years after its expiration may not be renewed, restored, reinstated, or reissued thereafter.
The holder of the license or certificate may obtain a new license or certificate only on compliance with all of the provisions of this chapter relating to the issuance of an original license or certificate.
