Section § 7321

Explanation

This law outlines the qualifications needed for someone to take the exam to become a licensed cosmetologist in California. Applicants must be at least 17 years old, have completed 10th grade education or equivalent, not be barred by specific reasons outlined in another section, and fulfill one of several educational or experience benchmarks. These benchmarks include completing an approved course in cosmetology, having relevant experience outside the state, holding a barber's license and completing a crossover course, or finishing an apprenticeship program.

The board shall admit to examination for a license as a cosmetologist to practice cosmetology any person who has made application to the board in proper form, paid the fee required by this chapter, and is qualified as follows:
(a)CA Business & Professions Code § 7321(a) Is not less than 17 years of age.
(b)CA Business & Professions Code § 7321(b) Has completed the 10th grade in the public schools of this state or its equivalent.
(c)CA Business & Professions Code § 7321(c) Is not subject to denial pursuant to Section 480.
(d)CA Business & Professions Code § 7321(d) Has done any of the following:
(1)CA Business & Professions Code § 7321(d)(1) Completed a course in cosmetology from a school approved by the board.
(2)CA Business & Professions Code § 7321(d)(2) Practiced cosmetology as defined in this chapter outside of this state for a period of time equivalent to the study and training of a qualified person who has completed a course in cosmetology from a school the curriculum of which complied with requirements adopted by the board. Each three months of practice shall be deemed the equivalent of 100 hours of training for qualification under paragraph (1) of this subdivision.
(3)CA Business & Professions Code § 7321(d)(3) Holds a license as a barber in this state and has completed a cosmetology crossover course in a school approved by the board.
(4)CA Business & Professions Code § 7321(d)(4) Completed a barbering course in a school approved by the board and has completed a cosmetology crossover course in a school approved by the board.
(5)CA Business & Professions Code § 7321(d)(5) Completed the apprenticeship program in cosmetology specified in Article 4 (commencing with Section 7332).

Section § 7321.5

Explanation

This law explains who can take the barber licensing exam in California. To qualify, a person must be at least 17 years old, have completed the 10th grade or equivalent, and not be disqualified for certain reasons under Section 480. They must also have either completed an approved barbering course, an apprenticeship, practiced barbering in another state, be a licensed cosmetologist who took a barbering course, completed a cosmetology and barbering crossover course, or have related military training.

The board shall admit to examination for a license as a barber to practice barbering, any person who has made application to the board in proper form, paid the fee required by this chapter, and is qualified as follows:
(a)CA Business & Professions Code § 7321.5(a) Is not less than 17 years of age.
(b)CA Business & Professions Code § 7321.5(b) Has completed the 10th grade in the public schools of this state or its equivalent.
(c)CA Business & Professions Code § 7321.5(c) Is not subject to denial pursuant to Section 480.
(d)CA Business & Professions Code § 7321.5(d) Has done any of the following:
(1)CA Business & Professions Code § 7321.5(d)(1) Completed a course in barbering from a school approved by the board.
(2)CA Business & Professions Code § 7321.5(d)(2) Completed an apprenticeship program in barbering approved by the board as conducted under the provisions of the Shelley-Maloney Apprentice Labor Standards Act of 1939, Chapter 4 (commencing with Section 3070) of Division 3 of the Labor Code.
(3)CA Business & Professions Code § 7321.5(d)(3) Practiced barbering as defined in this chapter outside of this state for a period of time equivalent to the study and training of a qualified person who has completed a course in barbering from a school the curriculum of which complied with requirements adopted by the board. Each three months of practice shall be deemed the equivalent of 100 hours of training for qualification under paragraph (1).
(4)CA Business & Professions Code § 7321.5(d)(4) Holds a license as a cosmetologist in this state and has completed a barber crossover course in a school approved by the board.
(5)CA Business & Professions Code § 7321.5(d)(5) Completed a cosmetology course in a school approved by the board and has completed a barber crossover course in a school approved by the board.
(6)CA Business & Professions Code § 7321.5(d)(6) Completed comparable military training as documented by submission of Verification of Military Experience and Training (V-MET) records.

Section § 7322

Explanation

To take the hairstylist licensing exam in California, you must apply to the board, pay the required fee, and meet these criteria: be at least 17 years old, have completed 10th grade or an equivalent, and not be disqualified by certain legal issues. Additionally, you need to either complete a board-approved hairstyling course in California or have practiced hairstyling elsewhere for an equivalent time. Three months of practical experience counts as 100 hours of training.

The board shall admit to examination for a license as a hairstylist to practice hairstyling any person who has made application to the board in proper form, paid the fee required by this chapter, and is qualified as follows:
(a)CA Business & Professions Code § 7322(a) Is not less than 17 years of age.
(b)CA Business & Professions Code § 7322(b) Has completed the 10th grade in the public schools of this state or its equivalent.
(c)CA Business & Professions Code § 7322(c) Is not subject to denial pursuant to Section 480.
(d)CA Business & Professions Code § 7322(d) Has done any of the following:
(1)CA Business & Professions Code § 7322(d)(1) Completed a course in hairstyling from a school approved by the board.
(2)CA Business & Professions Code § 7322(d)(2) Practiced hairstyling as defined in this chapter outside of this state for a period of time equivalent to the study and training of a qualified person who has completed a course in hairstyling from a school the curriculum of which complied with requirements adopted by the board. Each three months of practice shall be deemed the equivalent of 100 hours of training for qualification under paragraph (1).

Section § 7324

Explanation

If you want to become a licensed esthetician in California and practice skin care, you need to apply to the board, pay a fee, and meet certain requirements. You must be at least 17 years old and have completed the 10th grade or equivalent schooling. You also can't have a situation that disqualifies you under specific legal guidelines (Section 480). Finally, you must have either completed an approved skin care course, have relevant out-of-state skin care experience, or finished an apprenticeship program.

The board shall admit to examination for a license as an esthetician to practice skin care, any person who has made application to the board in proper form, paid the fee required by this chapter, and is qualified as follows:
(a)CA Business & Professions Code § 7324(a) Is not less than 17 years of age.
(b)CA Business & Professions Code § 7324(b) Has completed the 10th grade in the public schools of this state or its equivalent.
(c)CA Business & Professions Code § 7324(c) Is not subject to denial pursuant to Section 480.
(d)CA Business & Professions Code § 7324(d) Has done any of the following:
(1)CA Business & Professions Code § 7324(d)(1) Completed a course in skin care from a school approved by the board.
(2)CA Business & Professions Code § 7324(d)(2) Practiced skin care, as defined in this chapter, outside of this state for a period of time equivalent to the study and training of a qualified person who has completed a course in skin care from a school the curriculum of which complied with requirements adopted by the board. Each three months of practice shall be deemed the equivalent of 100 hours of training for qualification under paragraph (1).
(3)CA Business & Professions Code § 7324(d)(3) Completed the apprenticeship program in skin care specified in Article 4 (commencing with Section 7332).

Section § 7326

Explanation

To take the exam for a manicurist license in California, you need to apply properly, pay the fee, and meet these criteria: be at least 17, have finished 10th grade or its equivalent, and not be disqualified under another law. You must also either complete a nail care course at an approved school, have enough relevant out-of-state work experience, or finish an approved apprenticeship.

The board shall admit to examination for a license as a manicurist to practice nail care, any person who has made application to the board in proper form, paid the fee required by this chapter, and is qualified as follows:
(a)CA Business & Professions Code § 7326(a) Is not less than 17 years of age.
(b)CA Business & Professions Code § 7326(b) Has completed the 10th grade in the public schools of this state or its equivalent.
(c)CA Business & Professions Code § 7326(c) Is not subject to denial pursuant to Section 480.
(d)CA Business & Professions Code § 7326(d) Has done any of the following:
(1)CA Business & Professions Code § 7326(d)(1) Completed a course in nail care from a school approved by the board.
(2)CA Business & Professions Code § 7326(d)(2) Practiced nail care, as defined in this chapter, outside of this state for a period of time equivalent to the study and training of a qualified person who has completed a course in nail care from a school the curriculum of which complied with requirements adopted by the board. Each three months of practice shall be deemed the equivalent of 100 hours of training for qualification under paragraph (1).
(3)CA Business & Professions Code § 7326(d)(3) Completed the apprenticeship program in nail care specified in Article 4 (commencing with Section 7332).

Section § 7330

Explanation

This section explains what someone needs to do to take the test to become a licensed electrologist in California. To qualify, you must be at least 17 years old, have finished high school or an equivalent education, and not be disqualified for certain legal reasons. You also need either to have finished a board-approved electrolysis course, practiced electrolysis for 18 months outside California, or completed an apprenticeship program in electrology.

The board shall admit to examination for a license as an electrologist to practice electrolysis, any person who has made application to the board in proper form, paid the fee required by this chapter, and is qualified as follows:
(a)CA Business & Professions Code § 7330(a) Is not less than 17 years of age.
(b)CA Business & Professions Code § 7330(b) Has completed the 12th grade or an accredited senior high school course of study in public schools of this state or its equivalent.
(c)CA Business & Professions Code § 7330(c) Is not subject to denial pursuant to Section 480.
(d)CA Business & Professions Code § 7330(d) Has done any of the following:
(1)CA Business & Professions Code § 7330(d)(1) Completed a course of training in electrolysis from a school approved by the board.
(2)CA Business & Professions Code § 7330(d)(2) Practiced electrolysis, as defined in this chapter, for a period of 18 months outside of this state within the time equivalent to the study and training of a qualified person who has completed a course in electrolysis from a school the curriculum of which complied with requirements adopted by the board. Each three months of practice shall be deemed the equivalent of 100 hours of training for qualification under paragraph (1).
(3)CA Business & Professions Code § 7330(d)(3) Completed the apprenticeship program in electrology specified in Article 4 (commencing with Section 7332).

Section § 7331

Explanation

If you want to get a license to practice in California, you must submit a complete application, pay the required fees, and show proof that you have a current and good-standing license from another state that is not revoked or limited in any way.

The board shall grant a license to practice to an applicant if the applicant submits all of the following to the board:
(a)CA Business & Professions Code § 7331(a) A completed application form and all fees required by the board.
(b)CA Business & Professions Code § 7331(b) Proof of a current license issued by another state to practice that meets both of the following requirements:
(1)CA Business & Professions Code § 7331(b)(1) It is not revoked, suspended, or otherwise restricted.
(2)CA Business & Professions Code § 7331(b)(2) It is in good standing.
