ArchitectureIssuance of Certificates
Section § 5550
If you want to become a licensed architect, you must meet certain qualifications, apply for an examination with the state board, and pay a non-refundable application fee before taking the test. The board keeps the fee.
Section § 5550.1
This law states that anyone applying for an architecture license must show they understand and are skilled in creating designs accessible to people with disabilities. The licensing exam will include questions on this topic, and these questions will be updated regularly to stay current with new regulations and advancements in accessible design.
Section § 5550.2
This law allows the board to give a chance to take the architecture licensure exam to students who are in a special degree program. This program combines education and the necessary experience for licensure, approved by a national council. The timing for when students can take the exam depends on their specific degree program.
Section § 5550.3
This section allows the board to set up rules for outsourcing the grading of architect exams to a contracted vendor. The board must create clear goals and procedures to ensure the vendor follows their guidelines and standards for the exam. The board cannot outsource exam grading to anyone who does not comply with specific guidelines or legal requirements. Also, if you fully passed all parts of the Architect Registration Examination before May 1, 2023, you're considered to have passed.
Section § 5550.5
This law allows the board to process architecture license applications using a tax identification number instead of a social security number if the applicant cannot get a social security number and isn't behind on court-ordered support payments.
Section § 5551
If you pass the exam and there's no evidence that you cheated or broke the rules, you can pay the fee and get your architecture license to work in the state.
Section § 5552
If you want to get a license to be an architect, you need to meet a few requirements. First, you shouldn't have done anything that would get your license denied according to another rule. Second, you need to prove you've completed eight years of training and education in architecture. If you have a five-year degree from an approved architecture school, that counts as five years of this required experience.
Section § 5552.1
If you want to get a new license or reinstate a revoked one in California, you need to provide your fingerprints to the Department of Justice for a criminal background check. This helps the licensing board decide if you're fit to receive a license. You'll also have to cover the costs for this process. The board will keep track of any future arrests, but it won't share those records unless required by law. If you don't submit your fingerprints, your application won't be accepted. Additionally, when you apply, you'll need to certify that you've sent your fingerprints to the Department of Justice.
Section § 5552.2
Section § 5552.5
Section § 5552.6
If a state of emergency is declared, the board can give candidates more time to complete their application or exam, beyond the usual five-year limit. The extra time should make up for any delays caused by the emergency.
Section § 5553
This law says that if someone applying for a license has previously done something that would get their license suspended or revoked if they were already licensed, they can be denied a license. The process for this decision follows certain governmental rules.
Section § 5554
This law says that each certificate must list the name of the person it is given to, and the board is responsible for keeping an organized record and index of every certificate.
Section § 5555
An architect's license stays valid unless it is revoked, suspended for a specific reason, or expires according to the rules in this chapter.
Section § 5557
If an architect's license is lost, destroyed, or damaged, they can request a replacement. There's a fee for the duplicate, set by board rules and regulations.
Section § 5558
If you have a license to practice architecture in California, you need to give the board your current mailing address, email, and details about any business you use for your architectural services, like a firm or company. The board will list this information online, but not your email. Your email stays private and won't be shared unless a court specifically asks for it.
Section § 5559
Anyone applying for a professional exam or license, as well as those renewing their license, must provide a valid email address to the board. They must also alert the board to any changes to their email within 30 days. The email addresses given are not public records, meaning they can't be shared openly, except by a court order. If the board sends an email to the address provided, it’s assumed that it has been received. A 'valid email address' is one that the individual actively uses at the time of application or renewal.
